On February 17^th RIS students were fortunate to receive another special guest presentation. Professor Moon Yong-Rin, the former Korean Minister of Education, is an experienced educator and author who published 34 books.

The well-known Korean author spoke to our students specifically of his work titled “Happy School”, a book which guides students in leading a happy school life. Its story is one of a compassionate teacher and the experiences this teacher has while leading students through an enjoyable school life.

Throughout Prof. Moon’s visit students participated in a discussion of the importance of trust, friendship, honesty, responsibility, ownership and forgiveness.

Global Youth Environmental Forum

Our 5th - 8th grade students participated in an interactive environmental forum Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. The environmental forum was hosted by Samsung Engineering at Seoul National University and was called “Global Youth Environmental Forum.” The students had a blast!

The first morning we listened to three lectures promoting a healthy environment. Our first lecture was about "100 Ways a Cell Phone can Kill You" and our students enjoyed this lecture so much. They learned how much radioactive energy a cell phone has and the ways that disposing of a cell phone can hurt the environment. One of our students from 5th grade, Tami, asked "Is keeping a cell phone for a longer time period better for the environment?" Our speaker told Tami he made an excellent point and that we should start focusing on utilizing what we have and not the flashy marketing gadgets that are today’s fads.

The second lecturer was Korean film star, Ricky Kim, who was born and raised in Kansas, USA. He spoke to us about life in the jungle and what it's like to survive without our modern day necessities and how important it is to respect the world around us and the energy and sustenance that the earth provides us.

In between the first and second lecture we had lunch in our sessional groups where we met the other international school students who were attending the forum. Or students were split into three groups and mixed with different age groups and students from around the world. The students worked with these groups for the rest of their stay with Samsung.

After lunch we went back for one more lecture from a professor of Yonsei University about the preservation of wetlands in the world. He spoke about how they are a delicate ecosystem that provides us with several resources and animal habitats. He asked that even though there are not bogs and wetlands located in Korea that we remain active for this valuable part of our environment.

The student’s then separated from us for their sessional activities. As we observed from in and out of the classroom the students had a blast! The three groups, over the two days participated in the following activities:

· Watched a movie called "Solar Taxi" which was about a man who travelled all around the world exploring 40 different countries and their environmental wonders.

· Watched Environmental animations on ways to spread the word about caring for the environment.

· An interactive game hosted by Samsung representatives where they asked environmental questions and the students, in teams, recorded their answers on white boards

· Presentation of environmental activities to their peer group of 20 groups. The RIS students who presented were: Burak Saglam, Mutahar Chaudhry, Saud & Abdulrahman Al-Otabi, Jerry Yeh, Joshua Seo, Nora Al-Shubrami, Mohammed Algussa, Amina Chaudhry, and Salma & Tami Al-Hajri

The second morning saw lectures on “Global 180^◦,” “Economy and Environment,” “Water is Life” and “Ecology and the UK.” All of these lectures emphasized that we can improve our environment if we do small things every day. Our economic needs, fashion wants and social crazes are destroying our environment and we need to change how we live in order for us to save the earth, who provides us with an amazing habitat.

Samsung also videotaped both days and Savannah Al-Hindi, Mutahar Chaudhry and Tami Al-Hajri took hold of the microphone and asked a few questions themselves! Rock on! Saud Alsaqour and Jeny Kim were chosen to recite a “Water is Life” poem in front of the 400 participants in English and Korean.

The students learned so much from this experience and they are already thinking of ways to make R.I.S. more eco-friendly and improve their environment.

On Tuesday, February 14th Rainbow International School was honored to welcome Ray Davis as our special guest for the day. Mr. Davis is the Associate Director Australasia / Regional Accreditation Officer from the Council of International Schools (CIS).

CIS is a membership community committed to quality international education. CIS delineates standards and provides services that support the continuous improvement of international education. Mr.Davis carried out a Membership Visit.

Mr.Davis` visit was inspiring and informative. He provided the RIS team with positive feedback and encouragement. Many teachers got a chance to sit down with Mr.Davis and discuss Rainbow International School`s own unique vision and our devotion to academic progress and development.

RIS Students will go sledding in Seoul Grand Park on Thursday, February 23rd, 2012.

If it rains on Thursday, Field Trip will be postponed to Friday, February 24th, 2012.

Transportation costs will be covered by RIS, but students are responsible to bring 20,000 Won for a Lotte World ticket and their own packed lunch, drink, and snack. Students may wish to bring a camera, and are responsible to carry it throughout the day. Students can bring a small amount of money for buying - no more than 5,000 Won. Students must wear their RIS PE uniform for this field trip. Students will also wear a school identification card.

RIS elementary and middle school students will be are participating in the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Food Factor Competition.

The students worked out solutions to the various problems they were given and then started to share their knowledge, compare ideas, and display their robots with their Robotics Coach, Mr.Gurcan. Also students will present four main sections of Robots.Teamwork activity, technical presentation, research project and demonstrating.

The competition will be held on 4th of February 2012 in Seoul.

On Thursday, January 26^th, RIS was fortunate to have guest speaker Mr. Lee Sang-Ki visit our school. Mr. Lee is a well-known Asian Journalist who writes for the Asia Journalist Association.

He shared inspirational words with our grade four to eight students and discussed his success as a journalist. Many students wondered how Mr. Lee became a famous writer, to which he responded, "Be humble, show kindness, sincerity and diligence, because these are the things that are most important for your future."

Mr. Lee's visit was a great learning experience for all and he has encouraged our students to peruse what they love in life!

International Test!

RIS is excited to announce the implementation of the International Schools' Assessment (ISA) to this year’s academic program. This is a yearly evaluation that has been made to measure student’s skills in mathematics, reading and writing and has been developed for students from Grades 3 to 10.

The ISA results will help our teachers to see how our students perform compared to students from other international schools around the world. In a few months we will receive student reports which will inform us in which areas we are doing well & where RIS can improve.

Both teachers and students are thrilled about this great learning opportunity!

As you know, we will be conducting our first International School Assessments (ISA) starting with the trial this week. It is very important that the test is treated as important and administered professionally. The trial assessment will take place the morning of Friday, February 27th. The timeline for the this week is as follows:

Thursday January 26th
- Student Powerpoint Presentation: Ms. Sawlor & Ms. J.
All grade 3 through 8 students must be present in the auditorium at 2:15.
- Ms. Sawlor will administer Trial Test materials to all homeroom teachers. Including detailed trial testing instructions.

How many times did you hear that today? Probably a lot. But why are adults so hung up on hand washing? Why are they so in love with lather?
Washing your hands is the best way to stop germs from spreading. Think about all of the things that you touched today — from the telephone to the toilet. Maybe you blew your nose in a tissue and then went outside to dig around the dirt.
Whatever you did today, you came into contact with germs. It's easy for a germ on your hand to end up in your mouth. Think about how many foods you eat with your hands.
You can't wear rubber gloves all day long, but you can wash your hands so those germs don't get a chance to make you or someone else sick. When germs go down the drain, they can't make anyone sick.
So when are the best times to wash your hands?

before eating or touching food (like if you're helping cook or bake, for example)
after using the bathroom
after blowing your nose or coughing
after touching pets or other animals

Seollal (Lunar New Year; January 1 in lunar calendar) is one of the most celebrated national holidays in Korea. While many observe Sinjeong (Solar New Year; January 1 in solar/regular calendar), most celebrate Seollal, which usually lasts for three days: the day of, the day before, and the day after. This year, Seollal falls on January 23 in regular calendar.
More than just a holiday to mark the beginning of a new year, Seollal is truly a special occasion for the Korean people. Not only is it a time for paying respect to ancestors, but it is also an opportunity to catch up with other family members. Then, it is not unusual to see people in beautiful hanbok (traditional clothes) performing ancestral rites or playing folk games, to eat delicious traditional foods, and to hear stories and chatters well into the night. Read on to discover some of the highlights of Seollal.

Seollal demands a lot of preparation, especially in terms of gifts, traveling, and food. Gifts are exchanged among family members and friends, so gift shopping before the holiday is essential. The most popular Seollal gifts of all time are department store gift cards and cash. Other popular gifts include ginseng, honey, health products, massage chairs, toiletries, and food gift sets composed of tuna, hangwa, dried fish or fruits.

The morning of Seollal begins with an ancestral rite. Family members, dressed in brand new hanbok (traditional clothes), gather in front of the ritual table, and set it with an ancestral tablet and dishes of ritual foods according to the laws of ancestral rites. Once set, the rite begins with deep bows as greetings to the ancestor spirits, and proceeds with offerings and prayers, before ending with bidding farewell to the spirits.

Following the rite, everyone eats the ritual foods. Tteokguk (rice cake soup) is the main food of Seollal, and eating it is believed to add a year to one’s age. Have you ever wondered about that “who has the most powerful and well organized army in the world?” No, answer is not a country, it's you, and your body has an incredible defense mechanism against microorganisms, germs and pathogens around you. Here you will find an answer for the question “why do we get sick?" and also some interesting facts about pathogens, diseases and your immune system.

Ø One of the most vital systems in the human body is the immune system, which is a network of specialized cells, tissues and organs that protect our bodies from potentially lethal invaders such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, microorganisms, parasites and other pathogens. The human body is constantly waging war against a barrage of invading microorganisms.

Ø Lymphocytes are important cells in the body's immune system defense. Lymphocytes are formed in bone marrow. The cells that remain in the marrow will become known as B lymphocytes. Other lymphocytes migrate to the thymus and become T lymphocytes. The B cells main function is to gather intelligence on any invading microorganisms or pathogens. Once the B cells have identified and "locked on" (creating antibodies) to the invaders, the T cells are released to help destroy the pathogens. The specialized antibodies remain in the body, ready to fight the same infection should it ever return.

Ø Dieting reduces the number of killer cells, which leads to a weaker immune system

Ø It is very important to get your beauty sleep for at least 8 hours as less than 5 hours of sleep can significantly depress the immune functions.

Ø When the immune system attacks a harmless substance or chemical in the body, it leads to an allergic reaction.

Ø Some species of bacteria can reproduce every 20 minutes. Given unlimited resources, one bacterium could produce 1 million kilograms of bacteria in a day.

Ø Vaccines are generally harmless forms of a pathogen or parts of a pathogen.One way to make a vaccine are to inactivate the viruses or to kill the bacteria that cause the disease.

Ø Vaccine works just for viral infections like common cold and flu…etc…However antibiotic works just for bacterial infections like strep throat.

Ø The immune system accounts for one percent of our bodies' 100 trillion cells. All white blood is leukocytes. White cells (like all blood cells) arise in the bone marrow. The brain does not control the immune system.

Ø The number one way to boost the immune system is to reduce stress.

Ø Dieting decreases natural killer cell functionality, therefore it reduces the power of the immune system.

Ø Toxins such as air pollution, pesticides and even second-hand cigarette smoke can affect your body's natural defense system.

Ø Studies show that people who lack humor in their lives tend to have less protective immune responses

Ø Coughing and sneezing are part of the natural immunity system where the body is trying to eject pathogens and irritants from the respiratory system.

Ø Saliva, tears and breast milk contain antibacterial enzymes to help fight off harmful bacteria.

Ø One of the first responses to infection by the immune system is inflammation.

Ø Fever can sometimes help the immune system fight off infection because certain pathogens are unable to tolerate higher temperatures, which can also increase the mobility of leukocytes and the proliferation of T cells.

Ø The lungs and intestines secrete mucus, which can trap microorganisms, preventing them from entering the bloodstream and tissues.

Our body has a defense mechanism that is stronger, more organized and more efficient than the strongest armies in the world. In order to keep your body's defense system impregnable, pump your body with vitamins and minerals following a healthy diet. Exercise regularly and keep away from tobacco, alcohol and narcotics. Stay stress-free and keep laughing for a stronger immune system.

As the RIS school year continues it has become clear that our teaching team is made up of exceptionally well trained and qualified teachers.

Our teachers are using a variety of great teaching techniques, practices, methods and strategies that have been proven to work for our RIS student population. Just as we teach our students that learning is a lifelong process we as teachers must also continue increasing our knowledge to better our students. On Monday, November 21^st, RIS teachers participated in our very first teacher lead professional development day.

Throughout the day teachers collaborated together to share their teaching strategies, classroom management techniques and information on the integration of educational technology into the classroom.

During the workshops teachers were also able to experience first had exemplar lesson as they became participants of other teacher’s lessons.

It was an excellent opportunity for our staff to see firsthand how our coworkers are integrating the schools technology, classroom space, and educational resources to best teach our students. To celebrate the great success of the teacher collaboration and professional learning community we have started here at RIS the staff completed the day’s session with a fantastic dinner together.

Science Olympiads

Are you a hard-working Middle School student? Do you love Science? Are you ready to dedicate your Saturdays to a project for a chance at international travel, fame, and prestige? If you can answer yes to these three questions, RIS has an amazing opportunity for you!

Professor Cafer Yavuz is a Turkish scholar currently teaching and conducting research at KAIST in Daejeon. Professor Yavuz has offered to lead two groups of RIS students through the process of preparing and presenting projects at two different Science Olympiad competitions.

One group of students will compete at the 20th International Environmental Project Olympiad (INEPO) held in Istanbul, Turkey in May, 2012 . Another group of students will prepare to compete at I-SWEEEP, the International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering, and Environment) Project Olympiad, held in Houston, USA in May, 2012.

Each group will consist of two Middle School students with proven aptitude and achievement in Science. Students will need to commit to this Olympiad preparation for approximately four hours every Saturday from now until the competition. These Saturday sessions will be held on alternate weekends at RIS in Seoul and at Professor Yavuz's facilities in Daejeon.

All parents of interested students should contact Mr. Emin directly to discuss the logistics of this commitment in terms of scheduling, transportation, and costs. In order to begin the necessary preparations as soon as possible, please contact Mr. Emin by this Wednesday, November 23rd. He will be able to explain more fully to you the incredible opportunity these Olympiad competitions represent for the students.

Last Year 5 of our Middle school students won Honourable Mention in Texas, and Bronze medal in Turkey.

Drop Everything And Read

On Monday October 17^th Rainbow International School started participating in the D.E.A.R. program. D.E.A.R. stands for Drop Everything And Read. D.E.A.R. is a special reading celebration to remind and encourage students, teachers, administrators, and families to make reading together on a daily basis a priority.

The D.E.A.R. Challenge will challenge the students to read outside of the building. At the end of the challenge the person who has read the most will receive a prize and the class with the best cumulative total will also receive a prize. We will be judging the students on the number of minutes they have read for, not the number of pages or books. The students who read outside the building should have you sign their reading log, verifying they did read for the written time. At the completion of their books they should fill out the “What Did You Read?” form that is in their reading log.

RIS is very proud of presenting a Journalism Club. The Middle School Head Teacher Ms.Jaclyn Jones and RIS students started to publish a Student Newspaper. The journalism club members have been working really hard to make great articles! The first issue of the new RIS student newspaper will be published on Tuesday, November 15.

The GIANT GRANDMOTHER

Once upon a time there was a giant grandmother. She was so strong, but very old. When she wanted new clothes she asked the village people and the village had to make them. They worked on making the grandmother’s clothes for one year, but they couldn’t finish. The giant grandmother was so big, fat and old that in one step she could squash Hawaii. One day the village people couldn’t make her clothes because there was no material left for the clothes to be made from. She was so sad that she went home and cried and she cried until there was an ocean, which later became known as the Pacific Ocean. The grandmother was so sad she decided to move. So she moved to China and carried her house with her. On her way she went through Alaska, then Indonesia, then in one giant step she was in China. While she was there she wanted to be alone because of her sadness, so she created a large wall to hide herself from others. In china this wall eventually became known as the Great Wall of China. THE END.

Super Baby Was Born

Once upon a time, there was a small town. In the town, there was a woman who had 10 babies. One of the babies had super strong powers and he could break one planet at once! His name was Nick Murray.

One day, Nick got hungry, he saw the solar system. He jumped to the sky and caught Mars! Then he started to eat Mars! After he ate all of Mars he was still hungry. He started to pick up coconuts. When he collected all the coconuts, he ate them all at once, but it did not make Nick full. So he tried to eat the coconut trees too! Later he became full.

Another day, Pluto and some rocks fell down. He caught Pluto and the rocks and he ate them, but he ate half of Pluto and let it go. When he ate, he could see the clouds. When he walked, he hurt his leg and tried to sit down. On the ground there were many screaming voices and crying voices. He was sitting on the houses! He ran and ran away. He was so scared. After he ran, he rested. Then he ran one more time!

Eventually Nick Murray was an adult. He didn’t wanted to be an adult because he wanted to eat a lot of baby food. But he thought when he was a baby everybody liked him and they give him treats. Now he is an adult, but he doesn’t get treats. But, now he was happy because he is going to think about his adult life.

When he started to live in the Town, he saw beautiful women. He wanted to marry her, so he sent a message to her. When she saw Nick Murray she wanted to marry him too! So they married together. The women’s name was Alia Basra. Alia made over 1 billion tiny babies and that is how the world’s population began.

*This story teaches us how the first population of people was on earth!!!!!

I said thank you to a classmate for loaning me a pencil when they noticed I did not have one yesterday. I will remember to help someone else.

Dear Parents,

Thank you to those parents who attended Parent-Teacher Conferences on October 21^st and 22nd. Please continue to communicate with your child’s teacher throughout the school year. The teachers are best able to speak about the specific academic, social and emotional needs of your child.

PT conferences are a very important time for parents and teachers to work together to continue the great academic growth that students are making this year. If you were unable to attend your conference, please contact your child’s teacher to set up another time. Parents are a vital component in student success in school and it is very important that parents and teachers are working together to help enhance student learning. We appreciate your efforts!

Rainbow International School Lends a Hand!

At RIS our teachers are committed to educating our students academically in all subject areas such as mathematics, Social Studies, English, Korean, Turkish and science. However, we are also dedicated to developing compassionate community members. We have been working hard this year to provide students with an understanding of the challenges and difficulties other people around the world may face. Students have expanded their understanding of situations such as drought, famine, civil war and natural disaster.

On October 21^st& 22^nd, RIS students and families came together to raise awareness and funds to donate to the African people of Somalia, who are suffering from a major drought. Students and teachers from all grades worked together as one to organize a fantastic bake sale. Everyone lent a hand one way or another to make the event a success. RIS families not only donated baked goods, but also their time and effort to help others in need. Students generously bought baked goods and gave donations, while expressing their feelings towards the importance of lending a hand to help others who may be less fortunate than us. In just two days our school was able to raise 1 million won to assist those in Somalia.

RIS did not stop at helping Somalia. On October 23^rd a major natural disaster struck Turkey when an earthquake devastated the country. Many people were killed and many more have now been left homeless due to the destruction of the quake. Our students expressed their concerns for the people of Turkey and decided that we must help. In an effort to raise funds, we decided to combine our Fall Festival with a fundraiser for Turkey. Students made donations to the Turkey Disaster Fund in order to dress in costume for the festival. We are proud to announce that RIS students raised 1 million won that will be donated to the help the people of Turkey affected by the quake.

As a school, we are very proud of the efforts of our students and families. Teachers have been able to educate our students on the importance of helping others in need and students have responded positively. RIS staff would like to thank all of the students and families that have so generously donated to help make both these fundraising efforts a success! We look forward to continuing the development of our compassionate community participants throughout this school year.

Field Trip to Lotte World!

We would like to give some reminders about field trip to the Lotte World:

1. Students need to bring their own lunch, snack, and drink.
2. Each student needs to bring 20,000 KRW for an Lotte World ticket.
3. Students can bring a small amount of money for buying - no more than 5000 KRW.
4. Students must wear their school PE uniform.
5. We will leave the school at about 9:20am, and return by 3:00pm.
6. Students are responsible to carry their belongings themselves in their own bags.
7. Students are to listen attentively to their supervisors, and to politely and appropriately conduct themselves at all times.

Note : Students not in PE uniform or without a ticket will remain at School during the day.
